Congratulations to Century’s own CEO and President, Francis Smyth, for his induction into the Calvert Hall Alumni Hall of Fame! Smyth was a four-year honor roll student as well as a four-year member of the lacrosse program (1977 MSA Champions) and club intramurals. He was also a member of the National Honor Society. He went on to earn his bachelor’s degree and play lacrosse for four seasons at Princeton University and coached for Loyola University for two years as he earned his MBA from The Sellinger School of Business. Smyth started and was CEO of National Business Archives prior to selling nine years later to Iron Mountain. After helping the transition of Iron Mountain to a public company, Smyth acquired Century Engineering and became the Chief Executive Officer in 1996. As a result of turning the company around, growing the company to seven times its size and re-establishing Century as a solid firm in the mid-Atlantic engineering market, Smyth was selected as an Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the Year in 2008. Through the years, Smyth has served 24 years on the B&O Railroad Museum board and currently serves as the Chairman of the Board; he once served as Board Member and Past President of G.B. Charities for 18 years; was a Board Member for the Unitas Golden Arm Foundation; was a Board Member for AAA/Mid-Atlantic and the Mid-Atlantic Safety Foundation; was a Vice President of the St. Paul’s Board of Trustees for 8 years; served as a board member for Healthcare for the Homeless for 6 years, co-running Comedy Care each year; served as a board member and Vice President of Mount de Sales High School for 18 years; has been the Chairman of the Princeton University Alumni Association Book Award Program for 25 years; and past Chairman of the Maryland Technology and Economic Development Corporation (TEDCO).
This year’s Alumni Hall of Fame induction ceremony, Gala 175, was held on March 21, 2021 at the Towson University’s SECU Arena. Considerations for induction include regular and/or significant community service, meritorious professional achievement, and contributions of time, talent, and/or treasure to Calvert Hall College High School.
