Renovations to Current Structure
The work on the mechanical penthouse and back of house area consisted of full replacement of the MEP systems in these spaces. In the penthouse, our team replaced six air handling units, a 200-ton chiller, chilled water pumps, general lighting, electrical unit substations, and all associated chilled water system piping and electrical feeders. In addition to the replacement of existing equipment, new hot water boilers, hot water pumps, and hot water piping were designed to replace the air handler’s electric resistance heating system. The work in the back of house area included the replacement and reconfiguration of MEP systems in support of new coolers and freezers. New emergency electrical distribution was designed to provide emergency power to the equipment as well.
The Three-Story Addition
The first floor of the three-story addition to Gordinier Dining Hall includes a large multipurpose meeting room, seating area, restrooms, and mechanical spaces. The second floor is an open seating area on three sides with centrally located cooking and beverage stations. The third level houses the mechanical penthouse and the main mechanical systems, consisting of air handling units served by both a chilled water and hot water system. The chilled water system is supported by a new roof mounted chiller, chiller pumps, and associated piping. The hot water heating system is supported by boilers, hot water pumps, and hot water piping. New electrical distribution systems were extended from the existing building, and LED lighting was utilized throughout this portion of the project. A combined domestic water/sprinkler service was designed to serve the addition. Most of the second floor is open to deck with floating ‘clouds’ that required additional coordination of MEP systems in the area, from both a functional and aesthetic standpoint.
