Lewes Canalfront Park Pedestrian Improvements

Lewes Canalfront Park Pedestrian Improvements

A popular recreational destination for locals and tourists alike, Lewes Canalfront Park was in need of updates and enhancements. Century developed design plans for pedestrian improvements within the park, aiding in the success of Delaware’s “First State Trails and Pathways Plan,” which was created to make the state more walkable and bikeable.

Safe and Scenic Pedestrian Access

This Transportation Alternatives Program project provided new sidewalks, parking lot enhancements, additional lighting and new landscaping. Existing sidewalks and curb ramps along Shipcarpenter Street were upgraded to be ADA-compliant.

Sustainable Stormwater Management

Alignments and profiles were adjusted to make use of existing drainage features, eliminating the need for new drainage design. Stormwater requirements were met through the use of filter strips and pervious pavements.

Community-Focused Improvements

In addition to improving opportunities for recreational pedestrian travel in Lewes, this project supported economic development and enhanced the aesthetics throughout the area to match the historic surroundings. Throughout all phases of the project, Century coordinated with the local agencies and business owners to minimize the project’s impacts. Open communication was key: details like landscaping and sidewalk connections were discussed with the neighboring residents and businesses to reduce disruptions to customers.
