An Accessible Promenade
In addition to minor roadway reconstruction, design services included analyzing and recommending geometric modifications required to enhance pedestrian access and safety and bicycle compatibility. ADA-compliant ramps, sidewalks, pedestrian bump-outs and driveway crossings make the promenade accessible to all.
Environmental Sensitivity
The project took landscape services a step further than simple aesthetic appeal, incorporating Maryland plant species into the streetscape and hardscape design to promote awareness, appreciation and conservation of native plants and their habitats.
Bulkhead Repair
Working at the water’s edge comes with particular challenges, sending Century’s multi-disciplinary team underwater for the inspection and condition survey of the existing bulkhead to determine its capacity to support the new configuration of the promenade. Resulting structural recommendations included design of a pile-supported concrete relieving platform system, which intercepts the new fill and promenade loads, preventing load transfer to the existing bulkhead structure. The design also accounts for the locations of the existing underground tiebacks and the numerous utilities.
