I-585 Valley View Boulevard Interchange Phase II, Design-Build

I-585 Valley View Boulevard Interchange Phase II, Design-Build

Within this design-build contract, NXL, a Kleinfelder Company worked to complete an existing partial interchange that serves a major shopping center in Roanoke, VA. The scope of work included design, right-of-way services, environmental permitting, construction management, quality control, stormwater management, etc. The project’s innovative approach included a diverging diamond interchange that reduced right-of-way acquisition and environmental impacts while providing complete access between Interstate 581 and Valley View Boulevard.

Phased Construction

The project reconstructed the Valley View Boulevard Bridge and added a new pedestrian bridge over I-581. The Valley View Boulevard Bridge featured phased construction to maintain traffic during construction activities, bridge demolition, and the addition of lanes to an active bridge structure.

Safe Alternatives

The new pedestrian bridge provides a safe alternative for those living in the community to cross the heavily trafficked I-585, while several miles of additional lanes on I-585 serve to reduce traffic buildup. Additionally, sound walls that diminish noise in the surrounding community were erected.

Keeping Things Moving

Traffic control was a major concern of this project due to the necessity of two open lanes on I-581 and continuous access to the Valley View Mall. Our team worked diligently to help minimize disruption to traffic and mall access throughout the duration of the project, understanding the impact our work has on those living and working around us.
