BGE Paca Street Substation

BGE Paca Street Substation

Century designed the electrical duct bank and utility access system to distribute power from the BGE Paca Street Substation throughout the City of Baltimore. The project consisted of civil and electrical design tasks including surveying, subsurface engineering, and duct bank design.

Ambitious Build

The project scope included 8,000 feet of concrete encased duct and thirty new utility access holes designed to Baltimore City and BGE standards. The project was one of the most ambitious conduit builds in Baltimore because it required crossings of the Light Rail System and the new conduit system had to be connected extensively to the existing conduit system.

Challenges Encountered

Along with the ambitious nature of the project, other challenges presented themselves. There was a lack of accurate utility location drawings. The work also took place in a highly trafficked area, with both pedestrians and vehicles constantly passing through. To help continue essential downtown functioning, maintenance-of-traffic was necessary. Additionally, there were various light rail crossings throughout the work zone. All challenges were tackled head on by our team.

Additional Services

In addition to engineering, design, subsurface engineering, utility locating, and surveying, Century also provided construction management services, including inspection.
