Maintaining What Matters
Significant challenges included locating existing utilities, working in close proximity to historic structures and legacy trees, and maintaining vehicle and pedestrian traffic on a busy military base. The design effort considered future base expansion and current and future communication systems to prevent construction or operation interference.
A Backbone for Success
Century designed the electric system backbone to meet the reliability, maintainability, and security requirements of an advanced military installation. The backbone incorporates advanced design features including diverse and redundant points of supply, system reconfiguration capability, and distribution automation. Design tasks included subsurface engineering to identify underground obstructions and design of a duct and manhole system to BGE specifications.
Successful Distribution Systems
New gas and electric systems were installed in a joint trench to minimize the amount of disruption during construction. The new electric distribution system provides high levels of individual building reliability while protecting the backbone from faults on the distribution system, with primary cable, switchgear, and transformers designed to BGE specifications. The gas distribution system meets Federal Department of Transportation pipeline standards and was designed to meet existing loads and planned development.
