Designing for the Built and Natural Environment
From multiple stakeholder groups and historical properties, to cell phone towers and existing utilities, Century had several factors to accommodate in the immediate area of the project. In addition, during site investigation, it was discovered that environmentally significant vernal pools could potentially be impacted by construction.
Through detailed utility coordination, a 36-inch sewer force main and pump station, along with an extensive Verizon vault system, were relocated. To ensure the protection of vulnerable plants and animals, Century performed groundwater analysis and modeling to demonstrate that the construction of the proposed wetland mitigation site would not impact the existing vernal pools.
An Innovative Approach
Century prepared and coordinated detailed construction phasing and traffic signal plans to help maintain traffic in each direction on SR1 during construction. The project included an overall six construction phases with about 14 stages per phase. This approach provided a safe work zone, minimized the overall contract duration and costs, and minimized impacts to the local community and traveling public.
3D Modeling for Every Phase
To further streamline project progress, Century produced a 3D engineered model, which was able to be transferred to GPS machine control construction equipment throughout the design and construction phases, allowing for shorter construction time with better quality and safety.
