Senator Bikeway
Century performed the transportation planning and design of Senator Bikeway, a 3.5-mile trail located in downtown Dover, Delaware, providing a vital connection between Dover High School and US 13.
Four Phases
To facilitate construction, the trail was broken into four phases. Phase I included placing a 10-foot-wide trail on the northern side of Forest Street/Division Street. At Weston Drive, the trail divides into separate pedestrian and bicycle facilities. A new 5-foot-wide sidewalk replaced the existing non-compliant sidewalk, and a two-way cycle track was installed at-grade, eliminating the existing shoulder on the north side of Division Street. Phases II through IV provided the remainder of the connections between the new Dover High School and US 13, including connections to Wesley College, Dover Central Middle School, and Silver Lake Park along the way.
Innovation in Action
A focal point of the design is the use of green crosswalk striping to emphasize bicycle conflict points. This innovative color striping aids bicyclists in more safely navigating their paths, providing the people of downtown Dover an additional safe, environmentally friendly, and convenient way to travel.
