Penn Township Water Line Replacement

Penn Township Water Line Replacement

This project was for the replacement of an existing 2-inch galvanized water line for Penn Township, located in Centre County, PA. Century Engineering, Inc. provided water/wastewater services. The project involved the excavation for and installation of 1,900 feet of 6-inch C900 PVC and HDPE water pipe. The pipe was installed via both open trench excavation and horizontal directional drilling.

Other Components

Additional components of the project included:

  • Two stream crossings via boring
  • Installation of service taps with valves and reconnections of existing services
  • Installation of fire hydrants
  • Installation of system control valves with utility access holes
  • Conducting of leak detection
  • Installation of water meter pits
  • Miscellaneous demolition
  • System preparation including pressure testing, pigging, and flushing, chlorination, and bacteria testing of newly installed lines.

Overcoming Complications

This project was complicated due to an extreme vertical drop adjacent to and under Pine Creek, classified as an Exceptional Value (EV) stream, and the adjacent State Road in the village of Coburn, Centre County, PA. Despite the level of difficulty of the project, the Century team still managed to contribute to the project’s under-budget completion.
