Penguin Coast Exhibit

Penguin Coast Exhibit

When the Maryland Zoo needed to build the perfect habitat for one of their most beloved resident species, Century rose to the occasion, playing an instrumental role in creating what is now the largest outdoor penguin exhibit in North America – a fitting home for the continent’s largest African penguin colony.

Fitting Right In

The exhibit’s location in the center of the existing zoo required creative placement of stormwater management facilities, along with utility connections for power, water and sewer designed to connect to existing systems with minimal disturbance to the other exhibits.

Life Support Systems

Keeping African penguins happy and healthy in Baltimore is no easy feat. Environmentally friendly life support systems including low-impact stormwater management facilities, sustainable water filtration, and careful regulation of water temperature allow the penguins to thrive.

Creature Comforts

The animal holding rooms and hatching room feature adequate summer and winter ventilation systems. Special considerations for ventilation and condensation prevention were also given in the Visitor Center, where zoo guests can take advantage of large windows for underwater and above water viewing, and in the Embassy building, where Penguin Encounter participants interact with the animals.
