In addition, this project includes the widening of 32-plus lane miles of I-64 including 47,800 linear feet of drainage pipe, 91,450 linear feet of under drain, eight miles of sound wall, and the installation of ITS systems and new lighting. NXL provided a responsible charge engineer, two senior construction inspectors, and one construction manager for the independent assurance team of eight inspectors and two assistant construction managers. NXL represented VDOT, made determinations regarding work proposed and installed, and reviewed pay estimates. NXL made recommendations for payment, issued stop orders if required, reviewed and made recommendations regarding construction schedule, and participated in planning meetings. On this project, one of the primary responsibilities for the NXL team was to manage the oversight of over 40 QA and QC inspectors, including diary and report review as well as field oversight.
The major challenges of this project included multiple permits and significant environmental agency involvement along with the work zone management to accommodate traffic volumes exceeding 100,0000-plus vehicles per day through the project. NXL managed the traffic impacts through pre-construction meetings with the contractor and coordination with the traffic operation center.
