Making Room
The existing 25-acre building and attached cogeneration plant on site were demolished. Their concrete walls and slab were crushed on site for later use, pile caps were removed, and the relocation of a portion of an existing county storm drain that runs through the site was coordinated with Baltimore County, and road widening, maintenance of traffic, and utility relocation was coordinated with the Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration.
Land Preparation
The development, now home to a 130,000-square-foot Wegmans grocery store and 295,000 square feet of additional building space, required Century to work closely with the owner and architect during the finalization of its layout and parking requirements, landscape plan, and design of hardscape features. On-site water, sewer, storm drain, and erosion and sediment control design were also completed.
Stormwater Management Features
Some of Century’s most innovative work on this project involves what visitors to Foundry Row will never see: flooded parking lots in the event of heavy precipitation. Porous pavement – under which the crushed concrete from the original buildings on site was used as reservoir stone – allows water to pass through to an underground vault for peak management. Twenty-two micro-bioretention facilities ensure that any runoff is decontaminated before it reaches the surrounding soil.
