From a 125-acre abandoned former mine to a place to call home, with the help of Century’s vital infrastructure-related services, Delight Quarry has been completely transformed.
The site will consist of a 32-acre lake surrounded by 75 single-family houses, 66 townhouses, and 135 elderly housing units, along with a future office/retail “village center.” To build the infrastructure to support this sustainable development, off-site County and State road improvements were made, and on-site private roadways and parking lots were added to support residents and guests. Erosion and sediment control, grading, soil analysis and stormwater management services prepared the site for long-term sustainability.
A perennial cold-water discharge and stream restoration was designed to promote enhanced habitat around the quarry and restore Red Run to a condition that supports trout populations. Water, sewer and storm drain lines crossed areas where stream restoration occurred and were designed in accordance with Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE) Water Management Administration guidelines.
The probable maximum flood (PMF) for the site was evaluated for the breach analysis and reviewed by MDE. It was determined that the quarry would be considered a low hazard if the dam were to fail, due to the enormous storage potential of the lake, which has a depth well below the roadway elevation downstream of the outfall.
