Camp Small is a combination 115kV switching station and a 115 kV to 13 kV distribution station. The 115kV switching station will support a planned upgrade of BGE’s transmission system to eliminate radially fed substations. It will connect Camp Small and Coldspring Substations to transmission feeders coming from the Mount Washington Substation. The distribution substation has the capacity to feed thirty-two 13kV distribution feeders, some of which will be used to replace the Coldspring Substation feeder, as well as support for future growth.
The Camp Small Substation project faced significant technical, environmental, real estate, and zoning issues, which led to the design and placement of the proposed substation being a collaborative endeavor between BGE and the City of Baltimore. After extensive review of alternative site solutions, BGE and the City agreed on a land swap deal that would provide BGE with an alternate site for their substation (the Camp Small site) and BGE would transfer ownership of another site (the Melvale site) to the City. Century provided technical support and conceptual design services to BGE during the negotiations.
