Replacement of Bridge
No. CL-277 on Murkle Road
over Big Pipe Creek
Owner: Carroll County,
Department of Public Works
Location: Union Mill, MD
Expertise Provided: Hydrologic and Hydraulic Analysis, Scour Assessment, Wetland Delineation, NEPA 404 Documentation and Structural Design

This project featured the design of a hydraulically in-kind two span pre-cast, pre-stressed concrete AASHTO beam bridge to replace a badly deteriorated pre-stressed concrete channel beam bridge with exposed and rusted pre-stressing strands that was no longer able to carry normal traffic loads.

Challenges Encountered:
  • This bridge was in a very picturesque area so aesthetic considerations had a major impact on the design of the bridge.  The AASHTO beam bridge with open steel tube railings fit in with the rural character of the area very well.
  • To address scour issues and to minimize the foot print of the bridge abutments it was decided to found the bridge on drilled shafts.  The choice of this foundation type minimized disturbances to the stream channel and the resident fish population.
