The Maryland State Highway Administration (MSHA) recently published the Maryland Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MdMUTCD) 2006 Edition which is a comprehensive and expansive review and reorganization of the 2003 FHWA MUTCD and all related MSHA traffic engineering policies, procedures, guidelines, standards and publications. Century Engineering assembled a dedicated review team of persons with expert knowledge of the MdMUTCD Supplement and FHWA MUTCD. This project, requiring 18 months to complete, consisted of thousands of man-hours to review over 10,000 comments, over 800 pages of FHWA documents and hundreds of pages of SHA documents including the MSHA Standard Sign Book, Pavement Marking Policy and Signal Design Guide. 

Century Engineering was also charged with the research of publications associated with the MUTCD as far back as 1988 including the FHWA MUTCD revisions of 2000, 2002 and 2003 and subsequent SHA directives associated with those revisions which over that period of time created additional standards and limitations that conflicted, contradicted or enhanced the Federal MUTCD. The MdMUTCD is an innovative and comprehensive melding of traffic engineering policies, procedures and standards and has become a national model.  The final product is available online and has been distributed to every transportation agency throughout Maryland.

• Engineering documentation projects of this magnitude are complicated and this specific project required a considerable amount of communication and cooperation among a broad spectrum of engineers including the MD Traffic Engineers Council, municipalities, state and federal agencies.
