Bridge Surveillance System Analysis
Owner: Maryland Transportation Authority
Location: Baltimore, MD
Expertise Provided: ITS Surveillance Equipment Technology Review, Testing and Evaluation Services

This project included technical equipment analysis of a surveillance system to monitor major bridges throughout the State of Maryland.  A technical report was developed through research conducted to select the ultimate system to be provided delivering optimal results.  The research included investigation of PTZ versus fixed cameras, mounting options, number of cameras required, infrared illuminators vs. conventional lighting and color or black and white cameras including a cost/benefit analysis of the differing systems.  Preliminary layout and design services included systems for the William Preston Lane, Harry W. Nice, and Francis Scott Key Bridges. At each facility the proposed system cameras were to be monitored at the facility with the option of transmitting the feed across a fiberoptic backbone to a central operations center.

Challenges Encountered:
  • Evaluating existing technology and reviewing specifications in order to meet the needs of the project.  Included interviewing twelve vendors and a one day demonstration of equipment in order to select three vendors for the extended field testing.
  • Coordinating a two week testing period with multiple venders to evaluate their equipment under real life conditions including dynamic and passive testing.
  • Developing an inclusive system that covered the client’s needs including the benefit/cost analysis in conjunction with fiscal responsibility.
