MTA Central Light Rail Line
Owner: Maryland Transit Administration
Location: Baltimore City, Baltimore and Anne Arundel Counties, MD
Expertise Provided: Survey

Under Phase I of this project, Century was responsible for establishing second order horizontal and second order class II vertical control along the 13 miles of existing Conrail tracks. Century was also responsible for the horizontal and vertical locations of aerial photo points for a 500-foot wide corridor along that same 13 miles stretch for the development of the original base mapping. Metes and bounds surveys and right-of-way plats were prepared for Conrail's railroad corridor from North Avenue to Western Run. Century was also responsible for finalizing MTA's right-of-way plats for 22 miles of railroad corridor from Cromwell Station in Glen Burnie to the Maryland State Fairgrounds in Timonium.

Under phase II of the project, Century provided the horizontal & vertical control surveys, aerial mapping control surveys, metes and bounds surveys and design related topographic surveys required to prepare the 30% design package for the design/build contract for the three extensions of the Light Rail Line to BWI Airport, Penn Station and Hunt Valley Mall.

Challenges Encountered:
  • Performing all of the deed and plat research and putting together the property mosaic for 13 miles of railroad right-of-way acquired mostly by condemnation.
  • Performing over 100 individual tasks under Phase I.
  • Working closely with design engineers to prepare individual plats where fee simple takes and easements were required.
  • Preparing franchise drawings to define proposed light rail right-of-way within existing Baltimore County road right-of-ways.
