Location: Towson, MD
Expertise Provided: Structural, Civil, Survey, Geotechnical, Mechanical, Electrical

Century provided engineering for a new 43,500 square foot, 4-story facility designed to enhance Calvert Hall's academic programs. The Academic Building is "pie-shaped" with the south side built on a 16-foot radius. An elevated covered walkway bridge connects the second floor of the new building to the existing covered courtyard. Site improvements included a terraced plaza and serpentine concrete retaining walls to accommodate the steeply sloping grade.

Challenges Encountered:
  • Designing a foundation system that would provide a partial lower level while accommodating steep sloped and shallow rock.
  • Developing structural framing systems that would accommodate modern architecture and extensive use of glass and masonry materials.
  • Coordinating extensively with architectural and mechanical/electrical disciplines to accommodate the various learning spaces, studios and shops.
