This LEED^® Gold Certified school was Prince George’s County’s first LEED^® certified school building. The new Vansville Elementary School (formerly Laurel-Beltsville Elementary School) houses 792 students and 68 teachers and staff. 

The new 94,800 square foot school is equipped with a geothermal heating and cooling system consisting of building mounted geothermal heat pump units and ground coupled wells to improve the overall operating efficiency of the HVAC system.

In addition to MEP design, Century also provided commissioning services for the HVAC systems and associated ATC controls, lighting and daylighting systems, and the domestic hot water systems.

• Geothermal (ground coupled) well fields designed below parking lots and play areas.
• Geothermal system design concept greatly reduces energy costs and does away with the need for large and complex central plant equipment. The geothermal system contributed significantly towards the LEED^® points necessary for Gold Certification.
• No costly boilers, chillers, or cooling towers to maintain or replace.
• Heat recovery units were provided to reduce energy while maintaining proper ventilation.
• Energy efficient lighting design and control systems.
• White roof helps to reduce “Heat Island Effect” and minimize energy required for both heating and cooling.
• Dual-flush, waterless urinals, and low-flow water faucets reduce water consumption by 40% over conventional fixtures.
• Large windows and extensive use of natural light educes energy.
