A geotechnical investigation was performed for a new ethanol loading/unloading facility at a site previously occupied by above-grade storage tanks. The project consisted of new railbed, an off-loading facility, a marine vapor combustion unit, paving and underground utilities. Test borings were drilled to investigate the subsurface conditions for each of the proposed structures. Some areas of the site were found to have deposits of very soft alluvial clays. Evaluation of the most suitable type of foundation for the various structures included settlement analysis for shallow foundations and negative skin friction on pile foundations caused by the fill surcharge and railcar loadings.
Lab Testing:
- Classification
- Shear Strength
- Consolidation
- Foundation settlements.
- Estimating down-drag forces on pile foundations.
- Foundations for railcar bumpers in area of very poor soil conditions.
