Century Engineering was founded in 1953 under the name Green Associates. Through the 1950’s & 60’s, the company made its name designing many of the earliest interstates criss-crossing Maryland and within the Baltimore City limits. In 1974, the firm was purchased by a partnership of managers and senior engineers, changing the name to Century Engineering, Inc.

Throughout the 1970’s, Century continued to excel in the transportation arena and expanded its client base to the local municipalities as well as some noteworthy federal projects. By the 80’s, Century levered its transportation background to win the largest road project ever built in Delaware, State Relief Route 1 (SR1), thus gaining a Dover, DE office.

In 1986, Century broadened its civil and structural services purchasing a mechanical/electrical firm, Miller Schuerholz. For the ensuing decade, Century operated as a 100 person full-service engineering company growing its client base into the private sector.

In 1996, Francis Smyth purchased the company orchestrating an era of growth by offering quality engineering, top notch client relations, innovative business practices, and strategic acquisition. Today, we are a management-owned firm seeking out new challenges, while serving our client with creative and responsive attention. The continued growth and reputation of our company is the direct result of individual efforts and cooperation by all employees. We are ever mindful of that fact. Our future success depends upon the continuation of these efforts and the strict adherence to the highest professional standards and ideals by each and every team member.

Our company is only as strong as its people, and its people are only as strong as the time they devote to their development. Professional and technical societies are the best and most available method to develop an individual’s technical and social skills set, as well as stay informed of contemporary issues and changes in the engineering industry.

Engineering and technical staff members are encouraged to participate as active members of appropriate technical societies and professional organizations.

Some of the Trade and Professional Associations in which we have memberships are: American Traffic Safety Services Association (ATSSA), American Institute of Architecture (AIA), Association of Construction and Engineering (ACE), American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC), American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), American Society of Highway Engineers (ASHE), American Society of Landscape Architecture (ASLA), Chesapeake Area Society of Healthcare Engineering (CASHE), County Engineers Association of Maryland (CEAM), Society for Marketing Professional Services (SMPS), International Facility Managers Association (IFMA), Association for Bridge Construction and Design (ABCD), and Urban Land Institute (ULI).

As responsible corporate citizens, Century is committed to give back and strengthen the fabric of each community. As such, Century is active and philanthropically involved in all of our communities in numerous efforts to help our neighbors. From board participation on dozens of regional non-profits, to annual contributions, Century is engaged.

Membership in civic organizations, service clubs, luncheon clubs and charities is encouraged. Beyond our money, our time and talent can help others as well. We encourage each employee to be active for his or her own benefit – and those who they are serving.
