Frederick County Public Safety Training Building
Owner: Frederick County
Division of Public Works
Location: Frederick, MD
Expertise Provided: Civil, Geotechnical, Structural, Mechanical, Electrical

Serving the Division of Fire & Rescue Services and the Sheriff’s Office Training Academy, this new 45,000 square foot, 3-story building will provide much-needed training and office space.  This ADA compliant facility includes classrooms on the first floor and offices on the third floor.  The second floor is designed as an unfinished shell space to accommodate future expansion of the training program.  The building includes a partial basement for mechanical equipment and an areaway to allow access for future equipment removal and replacement.  Site development includes a new septic system, stormwater management, extension of the water main and 40,000 square feet of additional surface parking.

Challenges Encountered:
  • Preparing a design which would balance the architectural and engineering requirements with a limited Owner’s budget.
  • Accommodating the existing site grades to avoid substantial cuts and fills.
  • Designing a ventilation system that will accommodate on-site live burn training exercises without adversely affecting the indoor air quality.
