Century has been retained as the site/civil engineer at the 20-acre Holy Spirit Hospital Medical campus for over 30 years.  Some of the projects completed are highlighted as follows:

Ridge Road Intersection - Design and permitting of roadway modifications within the PennDOT Right-of-Way to realign the existing high volume exit driveway from Holy Spirit Hospital onto 21st Street, SR 1006.  The exit drive was realigned so that it connects with the Ridge Road intersection in a safer and more easily drivable configuration. Modifications to the existing traffic signal facilities at the same intersection were also completed. The scope of work included excavation, minor curb and pavement removal, roadway widening, curb and pavement base drain installation, and maintenance and protection of traffic.

Ortenzio Heart Center - Design of a new building land development plan. The building is a 54 bed, out-patient unit specifically adapted for patients requiring heart surgery.  The proposed building is three floors plus a basement having 120,000 square feet on a 30,000 square foot footprint.  Elevated walkways connect the new building to the existing hospital.  A total of 54 parking spaces were added to the existing area for the new building.

Helipad Design – Development of a new Heliport layout located on the hospital grounds.  Work included a site plan, grading plan, and signage plan.

Main Entrance Modifications – Design of entrance and exit modifications to include additional parking.

Parking Garage Inspection and Design – Conducted a structural inspection and designed repairs for deficiencies noted during the inspection. Construction oversight was also provided.

Deitz Emergency Room Addition – Design to include a land development plan approval for an emergency room addition.

Challenges Encountered:
  • Revising traffic circulation pattern to accommodate closing 21st Street access and utilize access to main parking lot and exit drive only.
  • Designing for future modification of exit drive to provide for two-way traffic in the future.
  • Maintaining access through the work zone during construction – both vehicular and pedestrian.
  • Relocating utility services while maintaining uninterrupted service.
  • Maintaining progress to complete on time and within budget.
  • Selecting and orienting the helipad site to meet the approach and departure flight path criteria.
