Gilbert Road Bridge Replacement
Owner: Cumberland County
Board of Commissioners
Location: Cumberland County, PA
Expertise Provided: Preliminary Engineering, Final Design, Construction Consultation and Construction Inspection

Replacement of the existing structure, a historic single-span truss bridge built in the late 1800s with a new two-span pre-stressed concrete bridge structure. The bridge spans the Yellow Breeches Creek.

Challenges Encountered:
  • Roadway alignment was chosen to minimize impacts to adjacent wetlands and to not impact a nearby historic district.
  • Environmental clearance needed to satisfy federal and state criteria.
  • Architectural enhancements were utilized to blend in with the rural historic setting.
  • New curved roadway alignment replaced the existing broken back curve.
  • Straight pre-stressed concrete box beams on a curved deck and severely skewed substructures required complex detailing of the structure elements.
