The Boardwalk at Hersheypark
Owner: Hershey Entertainment &
Resorts Company
Location: Hershey, PA
Expertise Provided: Civil, Planning, Landscape Architecture, Structural, Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing

Century has served as the preferred site engineer for Hersheypark for more than 40 years now.  On this particular assignment, Century was responsible for master planning assistance, civil engineering, landscape architecture, and mechanical, electrical, and plumbing engineering as part of an international project team assembled for this multi-phase boardwalk development project.

The first phase required the removal of existing buildings and attractions to make room for the water play area now known as The Boardwalk at Hersheypark.  Five major new features, including East Coast Waterworks, Bayside Pier, Sandcastle Cove, Coastline Plunge, and the Waverider were integrated within a very compact 4.6-acre area. Additional facilities consisting of changing areas with showers and lockers, rest rooms, games, retail, and food venues were also constructed to further support the new attractions.  The second phase referred to as The Boardwalk: The SEAquel adds the Shore, a 370,000 gallon wave pool, and an attraction called the Intercoastal Waterway, a 1,300-foot lazy river. Fitting within another small 5-acre site, the two new water attractions are supplemented with 27 waterfront cabanas, a restaurant, 2 food kiosks, 2 rental outlets, changing area with full showers and restrooms and 1,000 lockers.

Challenges Encountered:
  • Detailed construction staging and sequencing was required since Hersheypark was already very near its full build-out potential with major rides bordering all four sides of the site.
  • Organized and coordinated displaced and new underground infrastructure to include ductbanks, stormwater facilities, water lines, sewer lines, gas lines, and all aquatic lines within subcompact footprints without compromising operational requirements, building functions, or pool sizes.
  • Creative use of stormwater modeling tools allowed for the replacement of surface detention ponds with a network of underground pipes and chambers to meet peak flow management requirements freeing up additional space on the site.
  • Unique numerical modeling techniques were developed to demonstrate compliance with special entertainment complex parking requirements.
  • Design schedules were compressed for both phases requiring extraordinary sacrifice to meet announced milestones for opening such as the Park's 100th year anniversary in 2007.
